Bound by the Wind

A striking blend of mythology, history, and identity, this bold new play reimagines the legend of Mulan—not as a triumphant heroine returning home, but as a war-weary general struggling to reclaim her humanity. Set in the aftermath of battle, the story begins with a silent standoff: Mulan’s sword at the neck of a captured Rouran girl. From this charged encounter unfolds a tense and poetic journey between two enemies bound by secrets, gender, and survival. Featuring intimate physical staging, haunting sound design, and lyrical bilingual dialogue (Mandarin & English), the piece explores what it means to be chosen, the cost of loyalty, and the burden of being remembered as a legend. Inspired by East Asian war epics and infused with contemporary relevance, this is not the Mulan you think you know. "Utterly absorbing... a delicate balance of brutality and tenderness" – Early Audience Feedback Audiences can expect a visually arresting, emotionally resonant experience that moves beyond the battlefield and into the complex terrain of identity, sacrifice, and freedom. Perfect for fans of myth retellings, feminist theatre, and intimate historical drama.
