NOT FUNNY, IS IT?
Oscar is a former comedian with his best years firmly behind him. Once part of a hugely successful black British TV sketch troupe in the late 90s, and with his co-stars’ careers far outstripping his, he’s now making his living stoking the culture wars as a right-wing radio host. After a prickly first meeting, Bisola - an enterprising influencer fresh off of a dating reality show - taps Oscar for help writing jokes for her big break into acting. Through their writing sessions we peer into the ego of a man stuck in his past - soured by his politics and wider black society’s rejection of him, and full of passion with nowhere to put it. Will Oscar’s love for writing comedy - reawakened by his unlikely partner - be enough to help him move beyond his bitterness?
Grifting’s searing, character-led satire will make you laugh, wince, gasp, and reflect on how times have changed. Soundtracked by the motif of UK Garage music pioneered by black British communities, it boldly confronts the grey areas of culture, identity, politics and media, all while providing a starkly entertaining and original 90 minutes at the theatre.

A 50-seat fringe venue above The Bread & Roses Pub, the theatre programs a wide-spread variety of productions for local as well as far-reaching audiences. Equality, diversity and artistic quality are at the forefront of the theatre's programming, which features in-house productions as well as many visiting companies. The theatre regularly hosts touring shows and has worked with award-winning ensembles with decades of experience but also frequently welcomes and supports emerging theatre-makers taking their first steps. The programme includes new writing, contemporary revivals, reinvented classics and occasionally also devised work, improvisational theatre, comedy events, family shows and physical theatre.
Recently renovated, The Bread and Roses Theatre features brand new tiered seating, with 50 new individual seats, and a professional floor.
