Painting with Water
Harold Graves wakes to the sound of birds outside his care home window. He is not grateful for the morning. A dying retired literature professor, Harold is trying to keep control over what remains of his life, his room, and the few possessions he has left.
His final days are upended by Willow, an uninvited young woman with her own agenda, and complicated by an unlikely friendship with Father Mendoza, a pragmatic priest who refuses to let him hide from the question of what he will leave behind.
As Harold’s body fails and the world outside his window grows smaller, old certainties begin to loosen. Memory, guilt, literature, faith, and unfinished business press in on him, while the people around him force choices he can no longer avoid.
Painting with Water is a sharp, intimate play about memory, control, regret, and the stories we tell ourselves at the end of life.

The theatre regularly hosts touring shows and has worked with award-winning ensembles with decades of experience but also frequently welcomes and supports emerging theatre-makers taking their first steps. The programme includes new writing, contemporary revivals, reinvented classics and occasionally also devised work, improvisational theatre, comedy events, family shows and physical theatre.
Recently renovated, The Bread and Roses Theatre features brand new tiered seating, with 50 new individual seats, and a professional floor.
