Romeo and Juliet in Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu, 2001. Inspired by Nepal’s Royal Massacre. The landlocked nation’s civil war is escalating. Two feuding households: The Maoist underground bourgeoisie (Montagues) and the Royal establishment (Capulets) are forced to heighten their conflict due to our two famous lovers.
This adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (through the lens of both Shakespeare and David Garrick) transplants this well known play, into a real and recent conflict, using an unashamedly Brechtian approach: state-controlled news broadcasts interrupt the stage action throughout, projected for the audience alone, so we watch official narrative get built in real time even as we watch it fail the people living through it.
