The Final Exam: Gao Kao

12 - 20 Oct 2026

The Final Exam: Gao Kao

By The Whisper Current Productions

A student witnesses a classmate's suicide. The next day, lessons continue as though nothing has happened.

As China's National College Entrance Examination approaches, the classroom begins to fracture. Teachers become invigilators and enemies. Exam papers become battlefields. Standard answers become weapons. Haunted by the memory of the girl she could not save, one student is forced to confront not only the examination before her, but the beliefs she has been taught her entire life.

Blending physical theatre, stylised stage combat, projection, and surreal imagery, *Bound by the Wind* transforms the pressure of education into a visceral theatrical experience. Inspired by real stories, the production explores academic pressure, grief, mental health, gender, and the cost of conformity, while asking a simple but urgent question: if education teaches us how to think, what happens when we're no longer allowed to?

At its heart, this is not simply a story about the Gaokao. It is a story about growing up, holding on to hope, and searching for a piece of sky beyond the classroom walls.
