The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh
by Joseph Driver & Matthew Wake
Inspired by the extraordinary correspondence between Vincent van Gogh and his beloved brother Theo, this new play explores the relationship behind one of history’s greatest artistic legacies. Through the letters they exchanged, audiences are invited into an intimate world of hope, despair, creativity and unconditional love, revealing the man behind the masterpieces and the brother who never stopped believing in him.
As Vincent wrestles with isolation, self-doubt and his deteriorating mental health, Theo remains his constant source of encouragement and support. Following Vincent’s tragic death, Theo is driven by grief and an unwavering determination to ensure his brother’s work receives the recognition it was denied during his lifetime. Through memory, reflection and the brothers’ own words, the play becomes a moving tribute to love that transcends loss.
Exploring themes of mental health, family, resilience and the transformative power of art, this production shines a light on the often overlooked figure whose devotion helped shape one of the greatest artistic legacies in history. Emotional, intimate and deeply human, this is a story about the bonds that sustain us and the enduring impact of believing in someone, even when they cannot believe in themselves.
