This sparkling romantic comedy follows a brash reporter who falls for wealthy heiress Anne Schuyler, played by Jean Harlow. Their whirlwind marriage clashes with Stew’s working-class roots and Anne’s high-society world, leading to hilarious mishaps and heartfelt realisations in this pre-Code classic of love and class. The film will be preceded by a short introduction, and followed by a raffle. Women and Cocaine Presents is a film night presented by curator Caroline Cassin at The Cinema Museum to celebrate the fierce and liberated women of Pre code cinema. From the period of 1930 to 1934, before the introduction of censorship, women were depicted in roles with a frankness and sex-positivity that remains rare even today. These newly independent women pushed gender boundaries as they pursued their own economic freedom and excitement, defying the previous Victorian ideals of domesticity, sexual purity and religion. Hollywood soon caught on and began to represent these women on screen, and each month we celebrate a different woman from that era.

Set in historic surroundings in Kennington, close to the Elephant & Castle, The Cinema Museum houses a unique collection of artefacts, memorabilia and equipment that preserves the history and grandeur of cinema from the 1890s to the present day.
The Cinema Museum will be showcasing a series of events and screenings under The Lambeth Fringe.
